Settings & Customization
The settings menu allows users, teachers and parents to tailor the spelling experience to the specific needs of the learner. Please note that some options are only visible for Advanced and Premium account holders.
🔁 Repeat Number
This determines how many times the selected word list is cycled through during a practice session. For example, setting this to 2 will require the learner to complete the list twice before the round ends.
🎚 Difficulty Level & Lock
Difficulty levels control the "adaptive gaps" (underscores) in each word. Level 1 shows the full word (copying), while Level 5 shows only underscores (memory).
- Lock Toggle: When the lock icon is selected, the difficulty level cannot be changed once a spelling round has begun. This ensures the student practices at the intended challenge level without mid-round adjustments.
🔊 Voice Settings
- Enable Voice: Toggles text-to-speech on or off. When disabled, the student must rely entirely on visual cues.
- Voice Type: Allows the selection between UK English and US English to match the learner's local curriculum and regional accents.
💪 Strict Mode
When enabled, if a student consistently misspells a word, the mastery level will only decrease by one level, making the round more challenging. Usually each incorrect spelling will reduce the word level continually until it reaches level 1.
⌨️ Onscreen Keyboard
Specifically designed for tablet users or younger learners who may struggle with a physical or system keyboard.
- Keyboard Toggle: Shows or hides the custom onscreen SpellMe keyboard.
- Colourful Keys: Changes the keyboard to a vibrant, high-contrast layout. This is specifically aimed at younger learners to help them visually distinguish between different key groups like vowels and consonants.
- Mute Keyboard: Silences the auditory 'click' feedback when keys are clicked.
🎨 Background Color
Users can adjust the background color of the practice screen. This can be used to improve readability for students with specific visual processing needs or simply to suit personal preference.
📝 Select Words to Use
Once a list is loaded, this section allows for the specific selection or deselection of words. This is useful for focusing a session on a smaller subset of difficult words within a larger list.
📖 Story Mode Customization
- Story Words: Keywords entered here will influence the AI-generated theme. For example, adding the student's name or favorite animals will make the stories personalized to them. Ensure words are separated by commas.
- Number of Sentences: Sets the target length for the AI-generated story. A higher number creates a more detailed narrative.
✅ Apply & Close
Should only be used when a word list is loaded to adjust the word list words. Any other settings changed will automatically be saved whether clicking on Apply or Close.
