Word Lists

SpellMe allows learners to practice spelling using user generated custom word lists or by selecting from a specially curated library of educational and thematic lists.

📝 Custom Word Lists

Users can create and save their own word lists to target specific spelling needs or weekly homework. The number of lists and words you can save depends on the account type:

• Guest: 1 list, maximum 5 words.
• Basic: 5 lists, maximum 10 words per list.
• Advanced: Unlimited lists, maximum 20 words per list.
• Premium: Unlimited lists, maximum 100 words per list.

Premium feature: Premium users also have the ability to quickly import lists by simply copying and pasting or uploading an image of a word list to have it automatically transcribed!

✔️ Automatic Spellcheck

When saving a custom word list, SpellMe utilizes an automatic spellcheck feature. If the system detects a potential misspelling based on the selected regional dictionary (UK or US English), it will provide a warning prompt. Users can choose to correct the spelling or bypass the warning to save the list as-is. This prevents learners from studying incorrect spellings while remaining flexible for names or colloquial words.

🔠 Case Sensitivity

When practicing your spelling lists, please note that the words are case-sensitive. This means if a word is saved with a capital letter (like a proper noun or place), it must be typed with a capital letter during practice. If the correct letters are typed but the capitalization is wrong, the letter will show up as an orange error to remind the learner to check their case!

📚 SpellMe Curated Word Lists

Registered users have access to the SpellMe library of curated word lists, which are divided into two main categories: Phonics Lists and Festive Lists.

🔤 Phonics Lists and Structured Literacy

The core learning lists are grounded in structured literacy research, combining several pedagogical frameworks to support spelling acquisition:

• Synthetic Phonics: Lists focusing on starting blends, final blends, and digraphs help learners understand how individual sounds blend together.


• Orton-Gillingham Principles: Lists targeting specific spelling rules (such as short vowel + ck, words ending in dge, and the Magic 'e' syllable type) provide explicit, sequential instruction on English spelling conventions.


• Morphology: Lists covering plurals and contractions help learners understand how structural units of meaning change the spelling of base words.

🌍 Festive and Cultural Lists

SpellMe features an inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum. The Festive lists include vocabulary for global events, holidays, and cultural observances such as Eid al-Fitr, Lunar New Year, Bodhi Day, and Black History Month. These lists provide engaging, thematic spelling practice relevant to diverse learners.

🤖 Generating New Lists with AI (Premium)

Premium and Teacher accounts have access to the AI list generation feature. While browsing the curated SpellMe lists, users can click "Generate New List" to use artificial intelligence to instantly create a brand new, unique word list that follows the exact same spelling pattern or theme as the selected list. This provides endless practice opportunities for specific spelling rules.
